In 2014 I was one of the judges for the Association of British Science Writers radio awards.

I serve as an adviser to the Biotechnological and Biological Sciences Research Council as a member of its Bioscience in Society Panel. I have taken part in BBSRC’s institute assessment panel since 2011.

I sit on interviewing panels for applicants for the University College London medical school, and I’m one of the judges in the Debating Matters schools competition.

From 2008 – 2011 I was a trustee of the Hampshire and Islands Area Quaker Meeting.

From 2008 – 2009 I was a member of Research Council UK’s Science in Society Panel. In 2002 I served on a conflicts of interest working party of the Research Governance Committee at the Hammersmith Hospital.

From 1993 – 1995 I chaired the Association of British Science Writers, which furthers the interests of science journalists in Britain. During this time, I helped administer the setting up of bursaries funded by the Wellcome Trust for would-be science journalists to attend post-graduate courses.
